Subjects Offered and Entry Requirements

General Entry Requirements

The expectation is that students wishing to join USF would have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (or equivalent) to include English (either Literature or Language) and Mathematics.

Subject Specific Entry Requirements

Individual subjects also have their own minimum entry requirements which are aimed at ensuring students only take up a subject in which they are able to succeed. Students would need to meet the general minimum entry requirements detailed above and the subject specific minimum entry requirements for the subject they wish to study. Please see the tables below:

A-Level

Subject Entry Requirement Guide
English Literature Grade 5 or above in English Literature or Language. Grade 6 or above in English Literature is preferred
English Language Grade 5 or above in English Language or Literature.
Mathematics Grade 6 or above in Mathematics
Further Mathematics Grade 7 or above in Mathematics and studying A Level Mathematics
History Grade 5 or above in History
Geography Grade 5 or above in Geography.
Ethics and Philosophy Grade 5 or above in Religious Studies or Ethics is preferred
Biology A Grade 6-6 in Combined Science or a Grade 6 in Biology. A Grade 6 or above in Mathematics is preferred
Chemistry A Grade 6-6 in Combined Science or a Grade 6 in Chemistry. A Grade 6 or above in Mathematics is preferred
Physics A Grade 6-6 in Combined Science or a Grade 6 in Physics. A grade 6 or above in mathematics is required
Politics Grade 5 or above in English Literature or Language. A Grade 5 or above in History is preferred
Psychology Two grades in science of 5 or above and a Grade 5 or above in Maths
Business Studies General entry requirement
Art Students will need to have studied an art or design-based course at GCSE and achieved a grade 5 or above. If students have not had access to an art/design course, a portfolio of work can be presented to ascertain the standard of work.
Media Studies General entry requirement. Grade 5 in English Literature or Language is preferred
Dance Grade 5 or above in Dance
Spanish Grade 6 or above in Spanish
Music Grade 5 or above in GCSE Music. If a student has not taken GCSE Music then they must have achieved Grade 5 (ABRSM) on their instrument. Grade 5 theory (ABRSM) would also be an advantage
Product Design Grade 5 or above in a design related GCSE.
EPQ Open to anyone studying at least one A level, meets the general entry requirement, is able to manage time effectively and can work independently

Arts Award 16 extra UCAS points An enrichment opportunity running alongside the curriculum, the arts award develops an interest and aptitude in one or more visual, performing or creative arts. The ability and willingness to work independently and have a passion for the arts is essential.

Students who have not had the opportunity to study the required GCSE on entry requirements above will be considered on an individual basis. For example those whose KS4 school did not allow both Geography and History or those who have studied overseas.
